Cyclone Idai Appeal

“This is really a catastrophic situation” Claudio Jamal, Team Leader, World Vision Mozambique

Cyclone Idai swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe in the middle of March, killing at least 700 people and leaving 3 million people in need of humanitarian assistance as strong winds and widespread flooding ripped apart roads, bridges, houses, schools and health facilities and submerged vast swathes of agricultural land.

As flood levels begin to recede, work to clear debris, reopen roads and reconnect electricity and water supplies has started. However, cholera cases have been reported and there is a high risk of outbreaks of other waterborne diseases as supplying clean water remains a significant challenge.

The full impact of the disaster has yet to be established and difficulties in reaching some areas continue as many bridges were washed away. But some people who fled their homes as flood waters rose are returning home and aid is getting through.

World Vision staff are on the ground responding across the region where there is an urgent need for food, water and shelter. Our staff are providing maize flour and soya chunks, and tarpaulins and plastic sheeting for protection for the many vulnerable children and their families who have lost everything.

Please can you help us get these urgently needed supplies to the people of Southern Africa:

  • £30 can provide blankets to keep two families warm
  • £50 could provide a family with food for one month
  • £100 could help build toilet and washing facilities for families who lost their homes
