Walking home from school one day, Rani* heard her neighbours discussing her forthcoming wedding. She was 11. “I was shocked. I couldn’t understand what was happening to me,” she explains.
Now 16 and pregnant for the third time, she’s tiny but feels heavy. “I feel so tired when I move or walk, but I have no choice.” She has pains in her abdomen caused by being pregnant so often, so young.
In 2015, a Unicef report found that 65% of Bengali women (aged 20-24) were under-18 when they got married.
